About Us

We're Locals Who Couldn't Stop Talking About Fitzroy

Our story

One Square Mile, Two Hundred Years of Stories

Fitzroy was Melbourne's first suburb, and it has never stopped reinventing itself. Aboriginal country long before the surveyors arrived. A crowded working-class quarter through the boom years. The street where the Aborigines Advancement League and the Australian civil rights movement found their footing. Then artists, migrants, musicians and cooks, each leaving something behind. All of that sits within a twenty-minute walk. Most visitors pass through Brunswick Street, buy a coffee, and never learn any of it.

Fitzroy By Foot started because we got tired of watching that happen. We run small guided walks that head off the main strip and into the streets where the history actually took place — the heritage trail, the laneway murals, the colonial pubs, the kitchens worth queuing for. Our guides live here and know the businesses by name. You'll finish with the stories, an insider's map, and a reason to come back.

How we run our tours

Small Groups, Local Partners, Nothing Rushed

Approach 1 - We keep the groups small

No coach, no headsets, no flag held above forty people. Our tours stay small enough that you can ask a question mid-sentence and actually get an answer. It changes the whole feel of the walk — less lecture, more conversation with someone who knows the place.

Approach 2 - We spend your money in the suburb

Every tour runs through businesses we know personally: coffee from Bell St Coffee, a drink at Lola Belle Bar, rice paper rolls made with your own hands at Basil Leaf Pho. These aren't commission stops on a circuit — they're the places we'd take a friend. What you spend stays in Fitzroy.
